Researchers in this study wanted to understand whether breast cancer affects the surrounding normal breast tissue differently depending on a woman's genetic ancestry. Although tissue near a tumor may appear normal under a microscope, previous research has shown that it can contain subtle biological changes known as field defects, which may contribute to cancer development and progression.
To investigate this, the researchers analyzed tumor-adjacent normal breast tissue from women of African and European ancestry who had breast cancer. They examined patterns of gene expression and molecular signaling to determine whether the biological effects of nearby tumors differed between groups.
The researchers found that normal tissue surrounding breast tumors showed significant molecular changes compared to healthy breast tissue. These changes involved pathways related to inflammation, immune responses, cell growth, and tissue remodeling. Importantly, some of these field defects differed based on genetic ancestry. Women of African ancestry exhibited distinct molecular signatures in the tissue surrounding tumors, suggesting that the local breast environment may respond differently to cancer.
Overall, the findings indicate that breast cancer can influence nearby normal tissue and that these effects may vary across populations, potentially contributing to differences in breast cancer outcomes.
