The National Cancer Institute has renewed the prestigious comprehensive cancer center designation to the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, awarding it a five-year, $14.2 million grant.
Lung cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer death in the U.S. Each year, lung cancer takes the lives of more than 127,000 people in the U.S.—that’s more than colon and breast cancer combined.
Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. It doesn’t matter your gender or ethnic background, or whether you are rich, poor, urban or rural. While smoking is the most common cause, environmental and even genetic risk factors can cause lung cancer in never-smokers.
But there is good news.
Researchers at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered that Black patients with breast cancer who are treated with a chemotherapy called docetaxel experience less of a harmful side effect called peripheral neuropathy. Their findings represent an important shift in knowledge about a patient population who’ve historically been underrepresented in breast cancer research.
The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is driving an online public education campaign that focuses on cancer early detection and prevention.
In terms of complexity, few cancers hold a candle to pancreatic tumors. Pancreas lesions develop in seclusion, tucked away in millimeters-wide ducts that impede early detection, interfere with confident diagnosis, and complicate the possibility of surgical cure.
A mobile lung cancer screening program will soon take life-saving screenings to eligible high-risk Hoosiers statewide, thanks to a generous $4.5 million gift from the Tom and Julie Wood Family Foundation that will include matching dollars from Indiana University Health, bringing its impact to $8.5 million.
