The Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) is a unique alliance to integrate big data and data sharing for cancer research and care. ORIEN brings together key stakeholders in the treatment and care of patients with cancer to accelerate oncology discovery and development. This national network breaks down silos that can inhibit progress, allows researchers to share information and expertise, and facilitates cancer research collaboration among the nation's leading cancer centers.
The foundation of the alliance is the Total Cancer Care protocol, a longitudinal surveillance study of cancer patients that allows for lifetime consent, access to clinical outcomes data, genomic sequencing of tumors and the ability to recontact the patient. Member institutions agree to three basic principles in the protocol and consent: 1) follow the patient throughout their lifetime permitting sharing of data and information; 2) study the patient s tumor using molecular technology; and 3) maintain contact with the patient.
The map below shows the institutions that are current participants in the ORIEN alliance, and all contribute samples for sequencing and annotation data that can be shared. Indiana University researchers can access data from ORIEN at no cost. If you are interested in accessing data, please contact Heather Penwell at helander@iu.edu.
