Logistically Speaking

Breast cancer affects different people in different ways. Researchers know most about breast cancer in older white women. Because of this, to help researchers reach a better understanding of breast cancer in other groups, the Komen Tissue Bank is focused on recruiting tissue donor participants whom researchers are most interested in studying. These include Black and Brown women of any age (Black, Asian, Latina, Indigenous, etc.) and women under 40 of any races and/or ethnicities.

Although women who are not reflected in these target groups will not be denied an opportunity to donate tissue, the two groups outlined above are most valuable to research at this time.

Venue

Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is one of only 57 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. The IUSCCC is known as the central hub for cancer research and education across Indiana University. 

Over the last three decades, the IUSCCC discoveries have changed the way cancer is treated around the world. Recent advances in genomics, immunotherapy, bioinformatics, and other sciences are transforming knowledge about cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and survivorship.

All-Star Cure will be held at 1030 W Michigan St., Indianapolis, IN 46202, on the second floor of the cancer center. Tissue donors and volunteers should park on the third floor of the attached Vermont Street Garage. Parking validation will be provided.

Volunteer Shifts

There will be two shifts for volunteers (7:30am-1:00pm and 12:30pm-6:00pm) and three shifts for physicians (8:30am-12:00pm, 11:30am-2:30pm and 2:00pm-5:30pm) each day. Volunteer T-shirts and lunch will be provided (morning volunteers will eat after their shift and afternoon volunteers should arrive 45 minutes early to eat before their shift).

• A wide range of supplies is required for this event, including:
  1. surgical items (such as needles, linens, lidocaine, gloves, etc.)
  2. hospitality essentials (like food, beverages, and cleaning supplies)
  3. printed materials (signage and flyers)
  4. technology equipment (iPads, chargers, ultrasound machines, etc.), and
  5. general supplies (such as storage containers and office materials)
