Dr. Chalasani's research interests include:

An important portion of his research focuses on clinical and translational aspects of hepatocellular carcinoma, one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. He recently led a large multicenter study consisting of over 5000 individuals with hepatocellular carcinoma and this allowed his team to characterize the trends of non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States and gender and racial disparities. He is the lead PI for Exact Sciences international multicenter studies which are testing novel biomarkers for optimizing liver cancer screening in patients with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. His research work also showed that metformin, a commonly used antidiabetic medication, can be effective in reducing the risk for liver cancer in patients with cirrhosis due to fatty liver disease.
