Dr. Vachon's research interests include:
My primary areas of foci are symptom and self-management of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, particularly oral oncolytic agents (OOA). My main secondary outcome is reducing high-cost healthcare utilization (ER visits and hospitalizations) through effective symptom management. My long-term goals are to develop and implement interventions for cancer patients and their caregivers to provide evidence-based strategies in the home to reduce symptom burden and increase overall quality of life. My current work is based on my previous work as PhD student working with Drs. Barbara and Bill Given on an R01 trial focused on an adherence and symptom management toolkit intervention. My current work is the development the hard copy symptom management toolkit into a mobile phone browser platform. I submitted a K99/R00 to NINR as a postdoctoral fellow for this work that scored well but was ultimately not funded. I am planning to fund this work through IUSON start-up funds, as well as submitting for the Indiana CTSI KL2 and submitting a NIH K23. This funding will provide for the iterative development and pilot study, which will ultimately lead to R01 funding and the continued development of the symptom management platform intervention.
