My program of research focuses on psychosocial outcomes in survivors and their partners following a breast cancer diagnosis. My seminal research study, funded by NINR (F31) and the American Cancer Society, examined the relationship between social constraints, cognitive processing, and fear of recurrence and depression in both breast cancer survivors and their partners. My proposed research will build on the descriptive work done during my doctoral and post doctoral fellowships to develop interventions targeting fear of a cancer recurrence in survivors and their partners. Specifically, my next step is to develop an intervention for breast cancer survivors and their partners immediately following treatment to reduce their fear of a cancer recurrence by enhancing self-efficacy, communication, knowledge of ways to reduce risk of recurrence. My long-term goal is to develop interventions for cancer survivors and their partners to improve quality of life outcomes that can be implemented into the clinical setting.
