100 Voices of Hope Donor Impact

You’re making breast cancer research happen

In addition to inspiring and funding research “hunches,” 100 Voices of Hope also serves as a springboard for additional funding.

Here’s just one story to illustrate our success: In 2009, Dr. Hari Nakshatri, faculty co-lead of 100 Voices of Hope, had a hunch about identifying a potential biomarker for recurrent breast cancer in circulating blood.

It turns out his hunch was right: His discovery led to a $400,000 National Cancer Institute-funded grant and a $1.2 million Veterans Affairs grant, which in turn allowed him to patent his biomarker.

But wait—there’s more! In January 2022, Dr. Nakshatri was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an honor that recognizes his outstanding contributions to the progress of science and research.

And that’s just one example. Journal articles, news headlines, and even clinical trials are happening, all thanks to 100 Voices of Hope generosity.

“100 Voices of Hope funds research that would otherwise languish. Your gifts allow us to create the data needed to qualify for National Institutes of Health grants.”

“It does really feel like a miracle to have been in exactly the right place, where this lab is looking into treatment options for the exact type of disease I have—it seems like divine intervention.”

Jenny Larner Brown — “Whac-a-Mole” clinical trial participant
