Hester Research Scholarship awardees believe medical research and practice should work hand in hand

The awardees of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s 2024 Merilyn Hester Scholarships – Noah Burket and Maya Krishnan – believe medical research will inform their patient interactions.

"Concocting slime in crazy goggles and giant white lab coats” in high school science classes turned out to be Emily White’s first step toward helping cancer patients at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Both awardees of the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s 2024 Deutsch Scholarship – Eyram Kpenu and Devon McCourry – have one thing in common: the passionate desire to solve medical problems through discoveries.

Chemotherapy type can be personalized to decrease harmful side effects for Black patients with breast cancer

Researchers at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered that Black patients with breast cancer who are treated with a chemotherapy called docetaxel experience less of a harmful side effect called peripheral neuropathy. Their findings represent an important shift in knowledge about a patient population who’ve historically been underrepresented in breast cancer research.
