Cancer center development board gathers for fall meeting

The cancer center’s Development Board, a group of philanthropic donors dedicated to advancing the  center’s research mission, met for its biannual board meeting on Oct. 1 at SILO Auto Club in Indianapolis. Featured speakers were Nasser Hanna, MD, and MacKenzie White, program director for End Lung Cancer Now. The group toured the new mobile CT unit.

This volunteer board positions the cancer center to realize significant national and international recognition through the funding of programs vital to advancing research to help people with cancer. NCCN launches its Guidelines Navigator for breast cancer treatment

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)—a nonprofit responsible for globally utilized guidelines for cancer care—is sharing new NCCN Guidelines Navigator resources for breast cancer treatment as well as genetic/familial high-risk assessment during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The interactive format makes recommendations easier to navigate and search and links directly to other NCCN digital resources.

Bryan Schneider, MD, is a member of the NCCN breast cancer guidelines panel. Additionally, Nawal Kassem, MD, contributed to genetic/familial high-risk assessment guidelines as a member of the associated NCCN panels.

4th annual joint symposium is Nov. 12

Kelvin Lee, MD, cancer center director, and Tarah Ballinger, MD, will speak at the 4th Annual Joint Symposium hosted by the leading oncology institution in Slovakia – the National Cancer Institute, Slovakia – and the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year's theme is survivorship cancer care, and new findings and treatment approaches will be discussed by experts from IU and Slovakia. The symposium, Conversations About Survivorship Cancer Care, is Nov. 12 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Registration is open and participants can join virtually. Learn more and register.

Member headlines and highlights

John Turchi, PhD (EDT), has been named chair of the newly merged Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Pharmacology at the IU School of Medicine. Read the announcement.

Melissa Fishel, PhD (TMM), and Mark Kelley, PhD (EDT), have been awarded a patent for combination therapies to treat cancer and other diseases. Read more about their APE1/Ref-1 protein discovery.

Patrick Loehrer, MD (EDT), is a member of the newly formed ad hoc Working Group on Extramural Research Concepts and Programs at the NCI. The group will perform the peer review functions of the now-defunct Board of Scientific Advisors. The 35 members have expertise spanning across foundational, clinical and biometric research, clinical cancer treatment, cancer etiology, and cancer prevention and control. Read more.
