After joining Indiana University as a postdoctoral fellow, mentored by Drs. Andrea Bonetto and Lynda Bonewald, I started focusing on unraveling the mechanisms of cancer- and chemotherapy-induced musculoskeletal alterations. In particular, I became interested in understanding the causes of abnormal muscle/bone crosstalk in cancer, with the main goal of defining the role of bone-derived factors in causing muscle atrophy. My studies have taught me that cachexia does not affect a single tissue, but rather has a multi-organ nature. For this reason, I am also studying the metabolic dysregulations resulting from abnormal bone, muscle, liver and tumor interactions in cachexia. Along this line, my future research plans will understand the cancer-associated molecular, metabolic and mechanical interactions among multiple tissues with the ultimate goal of highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system to improve quality of life and survival in cancer patients.
