Biography
Antwione Haywood, Ph.D., (He/His) is associate director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) at the cancer center and assistant dean for medical student affairs and assistant professor of radiation oncology at IU School of Medicine.
Dr. Haywood is an award-winning advocate, teacher and educator. As a solutions-focused professional with a comprehensive background in diversity, equity and inclusion, he has spent his career dedicated to improving outcomes for those who are marginalized.
Equity and inclusion have been a common thread throughout Dr. Haywood’s career, and he has worked on projects investigating disparities in access, retention and support of underrepresented populations. His DEI work has led to multiple oral and poster presentations at national meetings, and he has been a first or senior author on multiple manuscripts.
In addition to his research interest in DEI, he provides strategic leadership and direction of DEI efforts for the cancer center. He provides training to faculty and students in mind-body practices and unconscious bias and is often invited to speak with community organizations and businesses, healthcare audiences and academics about mind-body medicine for stress reduction and preventive and wellness-based approaches to healthcare.
Dr. Haywood designed, developed and implemented curricula, which has afforded him the opportunity to have taught, mentored and evaluated a diverse group of trainees and providers spanning the spectrum of the health care. He takes particular pride in being a co-director of the Cancer in the Under-Privileged Indigent or Disadvantaged (CUPID) summer program, which exposes first-year medical students who have a demonstrated interest in serving disadvantaged populations to the oncology discipline.
His efforts around DEI have been recognized locally and nationally in such media outlets as NPR, WFYI, and the Indianapolis Recorder as well as the Association of American Medical Colleges and NASPA.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Haywood has been involved in the creation, preparation and review for both institutional and program specific site visits, internal and formal annual program evaluations across a multitude of specialties and quality curriculum for various accrediting bodies.
Before he joined IU in 2014, he was the director of the Academic Success Center at Purdue University. He also oversaw general studies at Purdue. He helped launch a national tutor training program and oversaw various initiatives to improve success of historically underrepresented populations in higher education.
Dr. Haywood completed his doctoral training in higher education at Indiana University-Bloomington, his master’s degree from the University of Kansas in higher education, and his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Old Dominion University.
Dr. Haywood is a certified wellness coach and holds a Lean Six-Sigma Green Belt Certification.
