As a computational health communication data scientist, my work primarily involves using Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to handle and analyze unstructured language data. This includes data from various sources, such as qualitative studies and social media platforms. My experience covers a range of topics, including sexual and reproductive decision-making, addiction and recovery, and how media affects health beliefs and behaviors.
More recently, my focus has shifted towards cancer communication, specifically addressing the needs and concerns of the Latinx community in the United States. This area of research has led to a peer-reviewed publication on vaccine misinformation and participation in two academic conferences in 2023. I am currently gathering data from online forums like r/breastcancer and r/HPV, with the goal of producing further peer-reviewed papers and as additional pilot data for new and resubmitted grant proposals.
In terms of grant applications, I have submitted a scored (yet unfunded) R01 proposal to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that examines breast cancer communication and its influence on Latinx perceptions of breast cancer. Additionally, another R01 proposal is under review at the NCI to study the intentions of Latinx parents regarding HPV vaccination for their children amidst widespread misinformation online. Based on the feedback from my scored R01, I am actively seeking pilot awards to demonstrate the feasibility of my proposed research methods. I am also applying for additional pilot funds to support both NIH NCI R01 grant proposals through the IU Vice President's office for Faculty Support
Moving forward, my research will continue to focus on understanding the role of media in shaping beliefs about cancer, particularly within the Latinx community. I plan to use the insights gained from my research to develop a culturally sensitive e-health intervention program, aimed at disseminating positive cancer-care messages in both English and Spanish.
