Accelerating cancer research that saves lives

Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is the central hub for cancer research and education across Indiana University. 

Over the last three decades, our far-reaching discoveries have changed the way cancer is treated around the world. Our recent advances in genomics, immunotherapy, bioinformatics, and other sciences are transforming knowledge about cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and survivorship.

And when they’re not in the lab, our members are leading clinical trials, teaching medical students, and caring for thousands of adult and pediatric patients.

Together with our partners at IU Health and our experts at IU School of Medicine, IU School of Nursing,  Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, and others from across the university, we are accelerating life-saving cancer research.

Our Vision

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center believes research cures cancer.

It is our responsibility to engage in ethical community research and practice. Community members prioritize individual dignity and mutual respect, and we expect to faithfully promote a culture of diversity, inclusivity, and equity in a supportive patient care, learning, research, and work environment.

When Larry Einhorn, MD, joined the IU School of Medicine faculty in 1973, testicular cancer was the leading cause of cancer death among men ages 15 to 35.

Dr. Einhorn developed the cure for testicular cancer in 1974, and now 95% of patients with that cancer can be cured. Einhorn’s unprecedented achievement—adding the experimental, platinum-based drug cisplatin to the chemotherapy regimen—turned the research world upside down. His findings remain the only cure discovered for metastasis of a solid tumor.

Since then, he’s focused on alleviating the harsh treatment side effects for survivors, many of whom are now in their 60s and 70s.

We continue to be inspired by Dr. Einhorn and are proud that the cure for testicular care is part of our storied history.
