My lab is interested in the biology of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in infectious diseases and cancer. We have identified a novel subset of CD8+ CTLs that can control the extent of tissue inflammation in vivo during pathogen clearance, and during the development of anti-tumor immunity. We are currently exploring the molecular cues responsible for instructing the development of these cells in vivo. We are also interested in the function and development of CD4+ CTLs. These newly appreciated T helper cells have been shown to play important roles in controlling melanoma and lymphoma. We have recently identified, for the first time, the transcription factors governing the development of these cells in vitro and in vivo. We are collaborating with members in the IU Simon Cancer Center including Dr. Mark Kaplan and Dr. Randy Brutkiewicz to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the differentiation of CD4+ CTLs in vivo and also the role of these CD4+ CTLs in eliminating B cell lymphoma in the murine models.
