Biography
Dr. Jiang Bian serves as the inaugural Walther and Regenstrief Endowed Chair in Cancer Informatics at the Regenstrief Institute and chief research information officer at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition, he holds leadership roles across Indiana University and its partners, including chief data scientist at Regenstrief, chief data scientist at IU Health, associate dean of data science at IU School of Medicine, and deputy director of the Regenstrief Institute within the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). He is also vice chair for translational informatics and a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science at IU School of Medicine.
With these intersecting leadership roles, he is driving a bold vision: to create a vibrant, sustainable community of data scientists connected through a common, integrated data infrastructure and data science ecosystem across IU entities. His mission is to forge transformative data science partnerships across IU, leveraging its depth of expertise to grow and innovate in informatics, data science, and AI infrastructure—positioning IU as a national leader in health AI and data science across training, research, and clinical operations.
An expert in biomedical informatics and health data science, Dr. Bian specializes in turning data into actionable knowledge that advances human health. His interdisciplinary background spans data harmonization and integration, AI and machine learning, causal inference, natural language processing, ontology development, and software engineering.
He brings extensive experience building real-world data infrastructures, developing advanced informatics tools, and applying cutting-edge AI methods to analyze multimodal clinical and biomedical data, always with a focus on translating knowledge into real-world health solutions.
He has a strong track record of federal funding, serving as PI or MPI on more than 15 R01/U01/U24-level grants.
Before joining IU, Dr. Bian held key leadership roles at the University of Florida, serving as chief data scientist and chief research information officer for UF Health and chief data scientist for the OneFlorida+ Clinical Research Consortium. Notably, he founded and directed the UF Health Cancer Center’s Cancer Informatics Shared Resource beginning in 2018 and spearheaded its recent efforts on Cancer Data Science.
