I am an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Surgical Oncology Division of the Indiana University School of Medicine. My research background includes formal training in Health Services Research (Master's Degree), as well as experience in running national, multi-center randomized clinical trials in surgery. As faculty at Indiana University, my current primary research interest is in developing 1) state-level surgical collaboratives, with in emphasis on oncology and improving guideline-concordant care at the state level, 2) improving patient access and flow between IU Health and non-IU Health providers throughout the state to ensure appropriate coordination of multidisciplinary care, and 3) increasing participation in surgical clinical trials.
I have specific current and future research plans in each of these areas. In developing state-level surgical collaboration, I have applied for an institutional American Cancer Society Grant to begin gathering pilot data to guide the structure of the collaborative and subsequent interventions. I have additional plans to apply for startup funds through the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American College of Surgeons, with eventual plans to apply for a federal grant once appropriate background data have been obtained (mentor: Karl Bilimoria, MD). Regarding coordination of care between IU Health and non-IU Health partners, I am the Quality Improvement lead within the Division of Surgical Oncology and will make streamlining this coordination of care an early priority using rigorous quality improvement methodology (mentor: Anthony Yang, MD). Regarding surgical clinical trial participation, I will be the surgical site lead in our planned participation in ECOG-ACRIN 2222 studying systemic therapy with or without hepatic artery infusion pump therapy in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastases, as well as the site lead for an upcoming American College of Surgeons randomized trial studying the role of perioperative steroids in improving outcomes after major hepatectomy for cancer (mentor: Michael House, MD).
