I received my PhD in Philosophy and my MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed my internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. I am Associate Professor of Medicine at IU School of Medicine, Faculty Investigator at the IU Center for Bioethics, and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Indiana University Indianapolis. I practice adult outpatient medicine at the Primary Care Center (PCC) at Wishard Hospital.
My research in bioethics has recently focused on issues related to patient decision-making and consent in preventive medicine, personalized medicine, and biobank research. In addition, I do work on questions relating to concepts of disease, risk, and health and their relation to health policy and healthcare justice. I also serve as the Research Subject Advocate at the Indiana CTSI and as the Director of the Translational Research Ethics Consultation Service (TREX).
I conduct empirical research on patient decision-making regarding colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, focusing on the impact of decision aids that present quantitative information about risks and benefits, and that provide "nudges" (or aid in default setting).
I currently hold a career development award from the American Cancer Society and my work has been funded by the IU Health Values fund.
