This study set out to understand why girls start their periods at different ages and what role our genes play in that timing. The age a girl begins menstruating, known as menarche, has been tied to her future risk for things like breast cancer, heart disease, and even overall life expectancy. To get answers, researchers looked at genetic data from over 180,000 women, and a key piece of that effort came from tissue samples generously donated by participants to the Komen Tissue Bank. These donations gave scientists a rare look at healthy breast tissue, helping them trace important genetic clues related to hormone activity and puberty timing.
What they discovered was that over 100 regions in our DNA are tied to when puberty begins. Interestingly, some of these genes only had an effect if they came from either the mother or the father, kind of like genetic “hand-me-downs” that only work one way. These same genes are also linked to body weight and certain diseases, suggesting puberty timing is more deeply connected to long-term health than we thought. Thanks to the women who donated to the Komen Tissue Bank, researchers were able to make these discoveries with greater clarity and real-world relevance.
