Patient & Caregiver Support

Hope represents a chance: Katie’s story

Katie, a kindergarten teacher and mom of two teenage boys, learned she had ALK-positive lung cancer in January 2023 at age 46. Her diagnosis came just two years after her husband died in a tragic accident.

Today, Katie is cancer-free thanks to her “village” of supporters who sprang into action and her treatment with a kinase-inhibitor drug called alectinib.

“I didn't fit the image of what I believed lung cancer to be,” she says. “I've now come to understand that that image simply does not exist. Every patient deserves a chance.”

Comprehensive care for every patient

Lung cancer is a complex disease, but you don’t face it alone. It takes a team-based approach to provide the best care possible. Each treatment plan is personalized based on cancer type, stage, and biomarker testing results.

From diagnosis through treatment and survivorship, the care team focuses on treating the cancer effectively while supporting quality of life. A dedicated nurse navigator helps coordinate care, answer questions, and guide patients through each step of the process, allowing focus to remain on healing.

Throughout the journey, highly skilled lung cancer specialists provide expertise, compassion, and support.

Supportive care throughout your journey

Cancer treatment can affect more than just the body—it can impact emotions, daily life, and well-being long after treatment ends. That’s why care goes beyond managing side effects to include emotional support, guidance, and compassion at every step. At IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, experts work to understand who may be more likely to experience long-term effects and find ways to reduce or prevent them. Patients are supported not only through treatment, but throughout recovery and survivorship, with care for the whole person.
