Building a legacy

The legacies of the McHenry, Sherman, and Trimble families are intertwined through deep personal bonds and shared experiences, both within and beyond their connections to lung cancer. Their individual journeys, each profoundly personal, have inspired a passion for action. United in their commitment to education, mentorship, and research, they are building an enduring legacy that will empower future leaders to drive lasting progress.

What students will gain

This is about more than lung cancer. It’s about developing the next generation of leaders. Through a blend of learning and real-world applications, students will build the skills, confidence, and experience needed to create meaningful impact in their communities.

Students can expect to gain:

  • Leadership and advocacy skills
  • Health communication and storytelling experience
  • Exposure to prevention and early detection efforts
  • Real-world project experience and professional connections

How the academy will work

The academy is a flexible, year-long experience featuring online learning, virtual mentorship, and in-person engagement—designed to fit student schedules.

Applications open in fall 2026. The first cohort will launch January 2027.

Where could this lead?

As the academy grows, students may gain exposure to:

  • Mentorship and networking with professionals
  • Leadership roles within academy activities
  • Advocacy events and community-based experiences
  • Potential pathways to research, internships, or future involvement

Some opportunities — including scholarships, stipends, travel, or conference participation — are still in development and will be shared as they become available.
