Despite advances in screening, most people who qualify for lung screening still do not get screened. Early detection remains our best opportunity to find lung cancer at its most treatable stage and dramatically improve survival rates.

This year's 6th Annual End Lung Cancer Now Gathering will focus on the critical role that screening and early detection play in improving outcomes for those diagnosed with lung cancer. Florian J. Fintelmann, MD

Medical director of thoracic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Florian Fintelmann is a physician scientist, medical director of thoracic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and associate professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School. He completed residency and fellowship at MGH, including training in interventional radiology. He heads the MGH Thoracic Ablation Program, where he specializes in minimally invasive treatments for lung tumors. He also leads a multidisciplinary research team focused on improving the early detection and treatment of lung cancer. Dr. Fintelmann has mentored 50+ trainees and junior faculty, including master's and PhD students, and published 110+ original research manuscripts. Professional service and membership include the National Lung Cancer Roundtable, the Society of Thoracic Radiology, the Society of Interventional Oncology, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and the Editorial Board of Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging.

Peter Mazzone, MD

Thoracic oncology program leader, pulmonary department, Cleveland Clinic

Dr. Peter Mazzone is a pulmonologist at the Cleveland Clinic, where he leads the section of thoracic oncology and the lung cancer screening and early cancer detection programs. A nationally recognized leader in lung cancer screening, he has chaired committees for the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Thoracic Society, contributed to national lung cancer screening and lung nodule evaluation guidelines, and serves on advisory groups for the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association. Dr. Mazzone is also the editor-in-chief of the journal CHEST and conducts research on innovative breath-, blood-, and urine-based biomarkers for the early detection of lung cancer.

Elaine Shum, MD

Dr. Elaine Shum is an assistant professor and thoracic medical oncologist at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. She graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s in science in biology and attended Stony Brook University School of Medicine for her medical degree. She completed her hematology and oncology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein School of Medicine. At NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center, she sees patients with thoracic malignancies and in the Phase I program. She is the principal investigator of several thoracic oncology and Phase I clinical trials. Her interests include targeted therapies for lung cancer, early detection for lung cancer and lung cancer in non-smoking populations.
