The 18<sup>th</sup> annual Miles for Myeloma saw the return of our Patient Education Symposium and Dinner. It felt so good to have our researchers, patients, and supporters back in one room together again.</p><p>The year was marked by incredible generosity including enduring gifts made by the Watson, Young and Beaudry families. At the event, Mayor W. SuzAnne Handshoe presented a key to the city of Kendallville to Dr. Abonour, her oncologist.<br/><br/>The community raised an astounding $430,000 through generous Tour Champion contributions, fundraising events, and individual volunteer campaigns. We also celebrated a very generous $500,000 gift made to myeloma research by the family of a grateful patient. At the finish line, they were greeted by more than 500 multiple myeloma patients and their families at the Scottish Rite Cathedral for a celebration followed by the annual patient education symposium and dinner. Several new riders joined this year, including a new patient who came from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to participate. The group of 25 cyclists started in St. Louis and then rode through Effingham, Illinois, Terre Haute, Indiana, and finally arrived in Indianapolis for a finish-line celebration before the start of the annual dinner and educational symposium. The ride continued the next day and ended in Indianapolis before the start of the annual dinner and educational symposium. The event raised more than $242,000, bringing the total to more than $1.75 million.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-13" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-13-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2010</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-13-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-13" role="region"><p>Dr. Abonour and his fellow cyclists rode from Muncie to Fort Wayne and Rochester via Logansport, through Lafayette and back down to Indianapolis, covering 234 miles. The cyclists were met by nearly 400 supporters at the finish line on the IU Indianapolis campus, before the start of the annual dinner.<br/><br/>During the dinner, the group heard from Kevin Hunt, a 35-year-old myeloma patient who climbed Mt. Rainier in July 2010 in an effort he dubbed “Mountains for Myeloma” that raised more than $10,000 for the cause. This event raised $275,000.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-14" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-14-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2009</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-14-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-14" role="region"><p>Dr. Abonour and his fellow cyclists rode from Evansville to Indianapolis, covering 200 miles and climbing 9,000 feet in just 48 hours. Dr. Abonour finished the last 80 miles into Indianapolis with one of his myeloma patients by his side.<br/><br/>The cyclists were met by more than 350 supporters at the finish-line celebration on the IU Indianapolis campus, and afterwards former Indianapolis Colts defensive player Elijah Alexander delivered an inspirational speech. The event raised $239,000 bringing the total to $1.2 million.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-15" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-15-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2008</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-15-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-15" role="region"><p>The highlight of this year’s midnight kickoff was more than 100 luminary bags, each bearing the name of an individual lost to multiple myeloma. The luminaries lit the path of the runners as they departed the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. About 50 cyclists trekked through the hills back to Indianapolis and finished at the cancer center with a celebration. The event raised $330,000 bringing the total to $1 million.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-16" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-16-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2007</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-16-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-16" role="region"><p>Dr. Abonour ran an astonishing 60 miles from Indianapolis to Bloomington and finished on the football field at IU Bloomington just before the kick-off of a football game. More than 250 patients and their family members formed a human tunnel to welcome Dr. Abonour onto the field. The following day, Abonour cycled back to Indianapolis to a finish-line celebration at the cancer center. The event raised $300,000.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-17" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-17-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2006</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-17-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-17" role="region"><p>Dr. Abonour ran from Carmel to Kokomo and then cycled from Kokomo to South Bend, finishing at South Bend Memorial Hospital. A highlight of the event was that one of Dr. Abonour’s patients, despite being more than 65-years-old and suffering from poor kidney function, completed the entire cycling leg alongside Gina Kramer, RN, myeloma program nurse coordinator. The event raised $240,500.</p></div><div class="accordion-item"><h4><button aria-controls="panel-0--407413925-18" class="accordion-title" id="panel-0--407413925-18-heading"><span class="accordion-label has-content">2005</span><span aria-hidden="true" class="accordion-icon"></span></button></h4></div><div aria-labelledby="panel-0--407413925-18-heading" class="accordion-content" data-tab-content="" id="panel-0--407413925-18" role="region"><p>At the first Miles for Myeloma event, Dr. Abonour cycled for two days, from Carmel to Marion, and then ran from Marion to Fort Wayne. The weather was unseasonably hot, and Dr. Abonour was actually hospitalized briefly in Huntington, but he stubbornly insisted on completing his mission. Miles for Myeloma far surpassed its goal of $25,000, raising $130,000. As a first-generation college student and medical student, she chose to stay close to home for all of her education and training.</p></div><figure class="media image" itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageObject"><img alt="Jodi Skiles, MD" src="../../../images/people/jodi-skiles-3600x2400.jpg"/></figure><div class="text"><p>She completed her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training at IU and joined the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics in July 2012. Deutsch Research Endowment honors Walter “Andy” Deutsch, PhD, and was established by his wife, Laura, after her husband’s death in 2017. The fund supports PhD, MD/PhD students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing degrees in biomedical sciences who have demonstrated potential for conducting oncology research. Successful applicants are students or fellows with a strong academic record, outstanding character and well-defined professional goals. This year three awardees will be funded in the amount of $5,000. We also know that a lack of research allows cancer to steal wonderful and beloved people from our lives. Melissa Virts is one such person who sadly died of a rare cancer of the biliary ducts for which there has been very little research. Melissa’s husband, IU School of Medicine alumnus Kip Virts, MD, and her sister Stephanie Ranslow have chosen to create a legacy for Melissa at IU through the creation of the <strong>Melissa Ann Virts and Kip E. Virts Endowed Cholangiocarcinoma Research Chair</strong> and the <strong>Melissa Ann Virts and Kip E. Virts Endowed Cholangiocarcinoma Research Fund</strong>. She was the beloved younger sister of Stephanie Wilson Ranslow. Melissa graduated with distinction from Lodi High School and initially attended one year of community college in San Joaquin. She then studied nursing at UCLA until her junior year in 1977, when she transferred to the two-year nursing program at nearby Mount St. Mary's University. She graduated in 1979 as the top nursing graduate, receiving the Mount St. Mary's University Clinical Excellence Award. Melissa passed her written nursing boards in 1980. </p></div><div class="float-right two-thirds"><figure class="media image" itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageObject"><img alt="" src="../../images/virts2-768x550.jpg"/><figcaption itemprop="caption"><span class="caption-text">Kip and his classmate and friend David Wolf, MD, graduating from IU School of Medicine in 1982.</span></figcaption></figure></div><div class="text"><p>Kip Edward Virts was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Feb. 2, 1956, to Donald and Patricia Virts. At just 10 years old, Kip broke a national record in the 100m breaststroke. He attended New Haven High School, where he was a high-caliber, state champion swimmer. He received an athletic scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and swam for the famous George Haines, a coach who trained 58 Olympians over four decades. </p><p>Kip and Melissa met at UCLA in January 1976 in a Biology 101 lab. When fate seated him across from Melissa – the most beautiful woman he had ever seen – Kip purposefully sabotaged his microscope by damaging the tungsten on the light bulb so he had to partner with Melissa rather than use his own equipment. It was love at first sight for Kip, and the duo was inseparable from that point forward. </p><p>Kip and Melissa were engaged the summer of 1978 after Kip was accepted to Indiana University School of Medicine. Kip knew they would be separated for a year while Melissa was completing nursing school and wanted to make certain his commitment to her was clear. The soulmates were married on July 21, 1979, in Santa Monica. </p></div><figure class="media image" itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageObject"><img alt="" src="../../images/virts1-768x576.jpg"/><figcaption itemprop="caption"><span class="caption-text">Kip and Melissa Virts during their first year of marriage; Kip was in medical school.</span></figcaption></figure><div class="text"><p>Kip and Melissa were inseparable for more than 46 years. The Virtses understood that they enjoyed the rarest of marriages – they agreed on everything and were a perfect match. They had a very loving relationship and had each other's backs through thick and thin. Kip describes Melissa as his sentinel and his lighthouse beacon; she was his everything. Though she has tragically died, Kip continues to love her deeply. They always said to one another: It’s You and Me, Me and You. Applicants from outside central Indiana who do not receive and/or need housing support have the option to stay with family or friends who live within 40 miles from the IUI Medical Library (988 W. Walnut St., Indianapolis, IN 46202). The IU housing policy does not allow participants under the age of 18 (at time of program start) to stay in campus housing. The cancer center does not permit participants to stay in unsupervised accommodations such as hotels, VRBOs, or Airbnbs during the duration of the program. </span></p></div></div><!-- /.layout --></div></div>
