The Breast Cancer Science Social, held July 9 in Walther Hall, brought together survivors, donors, researchers, and advocates for an evening celebrating the latest advances in breast cancer research at the Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research at the cancer center. Guests toured research laboratories, heard inspiring patient stories, and engaged with leading physicians and researchers about emerging discoveries, clinical trials, and the future of breast cancer care. The event highlighted the vital role philanthropy plays in advancing lifesaving research and connecting supporters with the impact of their generosity.
Elizabeth Miller, cancer survivor and Vera Bradley Foundation board member, served as emcee for the night. The program featured cancer center researchers Tarah Ballinger, MD; Hari Nakshatri, PhD; Rina Yadav, DO; Jeffrey Tharp, PhD; Siri Tadepalli, PhD; Kathy Miller, MD; Bryan Schneider, MD; and patient advocate Carmon Hicks, PhD.

Members of the cancer center’s Clinical Trials Office (CTO) team attended the 18th Annual Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) Clinical Research Innovation Meeting held June 23-25 in Chicago, where clinical research professionals from across the country came together to exchange ideas, share best practices and explore new approaches to advancing clinical research. Mario Contreraz, CTO director of operations, serves on the AACI CRI Steering Committee.

The cancer center was well represented at the Children’s Tumor Foundation NF Conference held June 26-30 in Denver. Steven Rhodes, MD, PhD, served as a co-chair for the conference. Additionally, he presented an invited talk, “T Cell Surveillance and Tumor Immune Escape Shape Malignant Outgrowth in NF1 Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors.” D. Wade Clapp, MD, was a co-chair for the session, “Brain Development in NF1: New Therapeutic Targets From Bench to Bedside.” Additionally, the following cancer center trainee members presented abstracts:
The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is teaming up with Gus Macker to launch a 3-on-3 basketball tournament benefiting cancer research at IU. On Oct. 3-4, join survivors, supporters, researchers, clinicians, staff and basketball fans from across the Midwest at the Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield, Ind., to turn teamwork into breakthroughs against cancer. The tournament welcomes males and females of all abilities, ages 8 and older.

World Lung Cancer Day is a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about lung cancer, reducing stigma, and highlighting the importance of early detection, research and community support. End Lung Cancer Now will host a World Lung Cancer Day event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, in the cancer pavilion. The come-and-go event will include a resource fair, artwork by cancer survivors, interactive activities and refreshments.
The annual ASCO Review at IU will be 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown. This program provides the latest information as presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting. IU Division of Hematology/Oncology faculty members will provide analysis of the more clinically applicable presentations at this year's ASCO meeting.
