D. Wade Clapp, MD, was named interim director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and the IU School of Medicine-IU Health cancer institute, effective June 5.
Clapp is no stranger to the cancer center, having been a member since 1999. He also served as leader of a research program in 2005 and co-leader of a developing research program from 2010 to 2011.
A distinguished professor and internationally recognized researcher, Clapp brings extensive experience leading complex academic, clinical and research enterprises and has long been committed to advancing translational science and interdisciplinary collaboration across the school and health system.
In 2021, Clapp received a $11.4 million grant from the NCI to lead a national collaboration of researchers on identifying new treatments for tumors that develop in children, adolescents and adults with a common genetic condition. The grant, a prestigious Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE), was first awarded in 2015 by the NCI to Clapp.
He is a nationally respected physician-scientist and longtime leader at the IU School of Medicine. He has served as chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief at Riley Hospital for Children since 2009 and has led one of the nation’s top-funded pediatric research programs.
Kelvin Lee, MD, stepped down as director of the cancer center and cancer institute on June 2.
