My primary research focus is patterns of Emergency Department (ED) utilization by recently diagnosed oncology patients, including predictors of ED use in this population. My long-term goal is to improve quality and reduce fragmentation of cancer care by reducing unnecessary ED visits. The primary steps needed to accomplish this are to 1) Explore cancer patients use of EDs including the reasons and diagnosis of ED visits and how they differ by cancer type, demographics, and specific oncology care and 2) Evaluate the experiences of oncology patients and emergency providers regarding ED visit care, satisfaction, resolution of the emergency or health problem and associated oncology related outcomes.
