In 2016 Dr. Rafat Abonour created the Abla Hamid Scholarship in honor of his mother to recognize her sacrifice, hard journey and the support she gave him over the years.
Abla was born in 1938 and grew up in Acre Palestine. She was forced to leave her home in Syria when she was only seven and was not able to finish high school. In 1984, after the loss of a son, Abla moved her other children, Rafat, Rea and Miasa, to the United States to provide them with better opportunities. She was always an avid supporter of education and was instrumental in her son, Rafat, attending medical school.
Dr. Abonour believes that the Middle East would be a better place if women were empowered with the tools needed to be independent and believes women from his native region can bring peace and stability. This is why he established a scholarship in his mother’s name to allow young women of Syrian, Palestinian, Lebanese, or Jordanian descent the chance to succeed and make a difference in this world.
With Abla’s recent passing, Dr. Abnour is asking for support of the Abla Hamid Scholarship at the Indiana University School of Medicine in lieu of flowers.
