My research interests include addressing racial/ethnic chronic disease disparities by identifying mechanisms and testing ways of intervening to increase social support and health communication as critical strategies for promoting chronic disease prevention, coping, and self-management. My research agenda at IUPUI is largely focused on family health promotion, and understanding the role of social/familial influences on individual health behaviors, such that targeted family-focused interventions can be developed to promote intergenerational health. My future research will be focused on understanding and exploring the role of stigma in communication about hereditary cancers within African American families, in an effort to inform a targeted intervention to reduce cancer stigma within African American families with a history of heredity cancers.
