Much of my clinical research concerns developing ways to improve the efficacy, facility and safety of radiation therapy for breast cancer. To those ends I have received funding to design and complete several investigator initiated trials. I have completed two phase 1 trials evaluating partial breast irradiation and concurrent chemotherapy, and a phase III randomized control trial evaluating cardiac perfusion changes in women receiving radiation with or without active breathing control. I have also designed and completed a trial to assess the use of PET/CT to better identify the lumpectomy bed for radiation treatment. With respect to health care disparities, I am presently investigating the role cytokines may play in the development of radiation-induced toxicity and tumor-associated outcomes in African-American (AA) women with breast cancer. AA women have worse radiation toxicity, and breast cancer outcomes than their Caucasian counterparts. My research has been funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for the past 8 years.
