To conduct research related to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of GI malignancy, including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. My previous published work included clinical studies related to hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. I would like to pursue work related to screening for HCC using imaging tools and novel biomarkers. One of the immediate goals is to understand the duration of protection (and its predictors) offered by a CT scan in individuals with cirrhosis when they are screened for hepatocellular carcinoma. For example, in an average risk individual, index colonoscopy performed for screening has been shown to offer protection for 7-10 years. However, such data are unavailable for screening for HCC. Additional short-term goals include develop novel biomarkers for cholangiocarcinoma in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis. Overall, thematically my cancer research will be related to screening and diagnosis of HCC and cholangiocarcinoma. I am also involved in Pharmacogenomic research related to cancer therapeutics with Dr. Flockhart's group. In addition to my own cancer research, I would like to work with IUSCC leadership to expand research related to GI cancer through facilitating collaboration between GI and IUSCC investigators and also facilitate joint recruitments.
