My program of research focuses on the development and testing of preventive interventions to foster positive health outcomes (i.e., resilience and quality of life) in adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYA). Using the well-validated and predictive Resilience in Illness Model (RIM) developed by Dr. Joan Haase, I am specifically developing unique strategies to minimize the risk factors AYA endure during the cancer experience that hinder resilience - such as debilitating symptom distress, uncertainty about the future, and persistent reliance on defensive coping skills (i.e., avoidant and emotive). When these risk factors are left unaddressed, it leads to the engagement in risk-taking behaviors, disruptions in family communication and functioning, and an unwillingness to connect with healthcare providers which can ultimately impact the long-term survival of AYA. My early work, during my doctoral education, was funded by two competitive training grant awards: (1) National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Nursing Research (F31 NR009733) and (2) Doctoral Degree Scholarship in Cancer Nursing from the American Cancer Society (DSCN-05-181-01). Recently, I completed three externally funded project which include: (1) development and psychometric testing of a connectedness with healthcare providers scale for AYA (funded by the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation): (2) the development and evaluation of the Resilience Profile for AYA and their parent (funded by the St.Baldrick’s Foundation) and (3) an evaluation of the direct and indirect effects of RIM protective and risk factors, with resilience as a mediator, on quality of life (funded by the Walther Cancer Foundation). My next step involves refining and pilot testing a tailored communication intervention for AYA and their parent entitled the Resilience Enhancement for AYA/Parents Profile.
