Imaging Studies

Imaging studies are performed first, to scan the body for a possible kidney tumor. Here's a list of imaging studies that are commonly done at the beginning of treatment:

Imaging Study Reason for the Test
Abdominal Ultrasound To evaluate the size of the tumor and to identify the exact location of the tumor. Usually the first test performed with rhabdoid tumor of the kidney. Usually not done with tumors outside of the abdominal area.
Doppler Ultrasound To evaluate if the tumor has grown into blood vessels.
CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis To determine if the tumor has grown in and around the kidney.
CT scan of the lungs To determine whether the tumor has spread (metastasized) to the lungs.
CT scan of the brain To determine whether the tumor has spread (metastasized) to the brain.
MRI of the abdomen,
MRI of the brain
MRI scans create images that tend to be more detailed than the images given by CT scans
X-Ray of the lung and bone To see if tumor has spread to the lungs or bones.
PET scan To scan the whole body for tumor
Bone scan To scans the bones for tumor. This is only done if your child has pain in the bones of his or her arms and legs.

Your child may receiving different types of imaging studies if your child's rhabdoid tumor is primarily somewhere other than the kidney (brain, etc.). Most likely your child will not be having an abdominal ultrasound if the tumor mass is not in the kidney or abdominal area.
