Late Effects

Things to know about After your Treatment

Late effects are complications that may arise with your child's health after cancer treatment due to the types of treatment used to combat the cancer. These treatments kill cancerous cells, but they may also damage healthy cells. This damage can cause late side effects and problems in your child's health. For this reason, your son or daughter should have routine follow-up care and testing so problems can be caught earlier rather than later. The late effects of surgery and radiation will depend on the specific location of your child's tumor.

All children are treated with Doxorubicin, Vincristine, Cyclophosphamide, Etoposide and radiation. On the clinical trial by the Children's Oncology Group children with stage IV also receive Carboplatin.
