Smoking Cessation

Quitting tobacco use - including cigarrette, cigar, pipe and smokeless tobacco use - can substaintially decrease both risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death in the United States, claiming responsibility for more than 85% of lung cancer deaths and one-third of all cancer deaths each year. In addition to lung cancer, smoking may increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer as well as cancers of the larynx, esophagus, pancreas, bladder, kidney, cervix, stomach, liver, prostate, colon and rectum.

However, it is never too late to quit. The risk of cancer begins to decrease soon after a smoker quits, and the risk continues to decline gradually each year after quitting.

If you use tobacco of any form and need help quitting, you may want to talk to your doctor, dentist or health professional, or join a local smoking cessation group.
