What exactly are "late effects"?
Late effects are complications that may arise with your health after cancer treatment due to the types of therapies used to combat the cancer. An example is chemotherapy drugs. These drugs kill cancerous cells but they may also damage organs and healthy cells. For this reason you should have routine follow-up care and testing so problems can be caught early on.
Late Effects:
- Heart Problems
- Second Malignant Neoplasms
- Osteopenia, Osteoporosis
- Hearing loss
- Kidney and Liver problems
- Fertility
- Functional disability secondary to a specific surgical procedure
- Hepatitis C/HIV
