Chemotherapy drugs and special instructions for patients

Cisplatin

May cause:

  • Hearing loss (Ototoxicity)
  • Kidney (Renal) impairment
  • Second cancers (Secondary malignancy)
  • Abnormal concentrations of lipids (fats) or lipoproteins (fat-protien complexes) in the blood (Dyslipidemia)
  • Inadequate functioning of the testes or ovaries (Hypogonadism)

High-dose Methotrexate

May cause:

  • Osteopenia, osteoporosis (A condition of bone in which decreased calcification, decreased density, or reduced mass occurs)
  • Renal and liver impairment

Doxorubicin

(usually in the range of 450-600 mg/m2, given with cardioprotectant dexrazoxane) May cause:

  • Cardiotoxicity (heart complications)
  • Secondary malignancy

Depending on the protocol, some osteosarcoma patients also received the following drugs:

Ifosphamide

(usually in the range of 27-60 mg/m2) May cause:

  • Secondary malignancy
  • Bladder dysfunction, malignancy
  • Renal impairment
  • Hypogonadism

Etoposide

May cause:

  • Secondary malignancy
