IU Simon Cancer Center, Clarian Health, Radio One Indianapolis promote colonoscopies to help prevent colon cancer

INDIANAPOLIS – March 24, 2008 -- In an effort to help Hoosiers learn more about colon cancer and how to prevent it, Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, Clarian Health, and Radio One Indianapolis are teaming up to promote Colon Cancer Awareness Week, March 24-30.

During the week-long series of events, Indianapolis residents will be encouraged to schedule a colonoscopy -- a screening that can help doctors identify and remove polyps in the colon before they turn cancerous. This type of test is especially important for people over age 50 and those who have a family history of colon cancer.

“Men in particular have an increased risk of developing colon cancer, and the risk is even greater for African Americans,” Patrick Loehrer, MD, IU Simon Cancer Center medical director, said.  “This partnership allows us to reach those in the community who are most at risk, but may not realize there are steps they can take to avoid colon cancer.”

To help spread the word about the importance of scheduling a colonoscopy, Radio One stations -- 106.7 WTLC-FM, 1310 WTLC-AM and 96.3 WHHH-FM -- will be broadcasting live at four different locations around central Indiana this week. The public is encouraged to attend one of the following live remotes to sign up for this life-saving procedure and register to win a $100 gas card.
